Health Care Professionals Training and Mentorship Opportunities
A. Choices and Changes (4.5 hours): Motivating Healthy Behaviours Workshop
(Developed by the Institute for Healthcare Communication)
Health care professionals will:
- Review patient engagement skills that develop rapport and promote adherence to the treatment plan.
- Learn how to assess patient readiness to make changes and intervene appropriately.
- Receive a certificate and Mainpro-M1 credits from the College of Family Physicians.
B. Brief Action Planning workshop (7.5 hours)
(Developed by the Centre for Collaboration, Motivation and Innovation; strongly recommend completing Choices and Changes prior registering for BAP)
Health care professionals will:
- Learn an efficient model to facilitate patient goal-setting and action-planning that can be completed within 5-10 minutes.
- Participate in at least one practice call with a skilled facilitator after the workshop in order to receive a certificate.
C. Empathy Effect workshop (4.5 hours): Countering Bias to Improve Health Outcomes
(Developed by the Institute for Healthcare Communication)
Health care professionals will:
- Identify the elements of the IN GEAR model for empathy conveyance.
- Identify two internal or external cues associated with interactions that invite judgment.
- Name at least one counter cue to shift from a view of judgment to one of understanding.
D. Treating Patients with C.A.R.E. workshop (4.5 hours):

Health care professionals will be able to:
- Describe what is meant by C.A.R.E.
- Discuss our organization’s healthcare service standards and how they relate to C.A.R.E.
- Describe ways to use C.A.R.E. on the job to deliver impressive healthcare service.
- Connect, through a personal connection to the patient and family.
- Appreciate the patient’s and family’s situation, assuring they feel heard and understood.
- Respond in ways that are helpful to the patient and family.
Empower, inspiring patients’ confidence to contribute to their own health and health care.
Mentorship: Professional development workshops
Once initial training is complete, health care professionals have opportunities to participate in the further mentorship training, including:
- Trauma-informed care;
- Motivational interviewing;
- Cultural competency;
- Mental health first aid; and
- Bridges Out of Poverty
