Kingston Community Health Centres Preventive Care Screening Program allows eligible individuals cancer screening. You do not need to have a Primary Care Provider to access screening.

Cancer screening is testing done on people at risk of getting cancer, but who have no symptoms. Screening can find cancer earlier, leading to better health outcomes.

We are happy to see anyone eligible for breast, cervical, colorectal or lung screening. Eligibility is based on age and/or family history as shown in the table below.

If you are unsure of your eligibility or have questions, please book online or call the clinic to book an appointment with our Preventive care Nurse/Nurse Practitioner.

Type of cancerWho should be screenedTestHow often
BreastAge 40-74 *    MammogramAt least every 2 years

CervicalAge 25 to 70, if you have a cervix (if you have ever been sexually active)Pap testEvery 3 years
ColorectalAge 50 to 74 with no family history or personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s or colitis)*At-home stool test, also called a fecal immunochemical test (FIT)    Every 2 years
LungAge 55 to 74, have smoked cigarettes daily for 20 yearsLow-dose computed tomography (low-dose CT scan)**Annually for 3 years

*The above table is for those at average risk of developing these cancers. Those with a family history of cancer may qualify for high-risk cancer screening. If you have a family history of one of these cancers you made need to be screened at a younger age, more frequently and with additional testing.

** Ontario Lung Screening Program locations do not currently include Kingston. See available locations here. A discussion with our Preventive Care Program or your family doctor can help you identify options available to you.

Upon booking a Preventive Care appointment you will meet with a Preventive Care specialist (nurse or Nurse Practitioner) to discuss your personal risks for cancer and which screening is appropriate for you. Following this assessment the Nurse Practitioner will order the tests and update you on the results when available. The Preventive Care specialist will also consider possible services and programs aligning with your health goals (diabetes screening, smoking cessation, self-management for chronic conditions, and a customized prevention plan).  If a Pap test is required, it will be booked in clinic with the prevention practitioner.
