Registered Respiratory Therapists work with patients with all kinds of breathing or pulmonary disorders, such as asthma, COPD, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis and bronchiectasis. Through respiratory assessment and education they support patients and their families in optimizing their lung health.
The Allied Health Team Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) runs the Lung Health Program with individual services and group workshops in-person or virtually (by phone or video call). Services include:
- Spirometry testing – to measure lung volume and airway function, and other respiratory assessment
- Management of asthma and COPD
- Review inhaler use and need for change
- Smoking cessation – learn about the STOP program
- Education on lung diseases, including breathing exercises and techniques how to improve lung health
- Virtual home-monitoring with the Breathe Program, an L&A Hospital initiative, with RRT follow-up
- CPAP Clinics – to help learn about optimizing use of the CPAP machine used for treating sleep apnea
