Brief Action Planning (BAP) is a highly structured, patient‑centered model grounded in the principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI). It provides a simple, practical framework for conversations that help individuals turn their intentions for healthier behaviours into clear, achievable plans. The core skills are applicable to anyone supporting others through behaviour change.

BAP helps address many of the challenges providers face when offering self‑management support. It can be integrated into routine practice by individual clinicians or health care teams to enhance patient‑centered goal setting, action planning, and confidence‑building in chronic disease management and prevention.

This full‑day virtual course, delivered via Zoom, offers health care providers the opportunity to learn concise and efficient communication strategies suitable for use within medical appointments.

The training covers foundational literature, theory, and techniques related to behaviour change and self‑management support, providing participants with a strong grounding in the BAP approach.

This training workshop includes:

  1. Full day virtual workshop on Friday, March 6, 2026 from 9:00am to 4:00pm EST (lunch break included)
  2. Two one-hour practice calls in the week following the workshop, to be scheduled with the facilitator:
  • Tues March 10 12:30-1:30pm
  • Thurs March 12 12:30-1:30pm
  • Thurs March 12 4:00-5:00pm
  • Thurs March 12 5:30-6:30pm

Brief Action Planning is a highly structured, patient-centered and evidence informed model based on the principles and practice of Motivational Interviewing (MI). It is a structured way of having a conversation with someone who is interested in turning their hopes for healthy behaviours into concrete plans. The core skills can be used by anyone interested in supporting others to make change.

Participants are required to complete at least 2 practice feedback calls of 1 hour each, in order to receive a completion certificate.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe the Spirit of MI in health behavior change
  • Utilize three core questions during patient visits
  • Demonstrate and receive feedback on 5 core skills for facilitating patient centered action planning

Brief Action Planning (BAP) addresses many of the barriers providers have cited to providing self-management support. It can be used routinely by both individual providers and health care teams to facilitate patient-centered goal setting, action planning and to build self-efficacy in chronic disease management and prevention.

This day course is fully virtual via Zoom meeting. It will provide health care providers with an opportunity to learn specific, brief, and efficient communication strategies and skills that can be used during medical appointments.

It is designed to familiarize you with the literature, theory and techniques for promoting change in health behaviour and supporting self-management in patients.
