Informed decision-making empowers patients, clients, and peers to actively participate in their own care by partnering with them to determine the most appropriate course of action. It emphasizes helping individuals weigh the potential benefits and risks of their options while considering their unique values and preferences. This training provides both a conceptual framework and a structured approach to guiding effective informed decision-making conversations.
This workshop is designed for frontline clinicians involved in diagnostic or treatment decisions. It focuses on building the skills needed to form effective partnerships that help patients make decisions aligned with their desired level of involvement and personal values. Participants will learn practical tools, including the Ask-Offer-Ask approach for sharing information and advice, and the BRAIN worksheet to guide informed decision-making. Learning objectives will include:
- Identify the values that underpin informed decision-making
- Define person- and family-centred care, informed decision-making, and shared decision-making
- Describe the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and ways to demonstrate it
- Demonstrate the Ask-Offer-Ask approach and use of the BRAIN worksheet
