Position Summary
The Settlement Worker provides information and guidance to vulnerable newcomers (refugees, refugee
claimants and general newcomer complex cases) arriving to Kingston and area. They support individuals
and families in accessing and navigating government and community services to help them meet their
settlement needs.
The main focus of the role is increasing the health and wellbeing of the clients. The incumbent will assist
newcomers with more complex settlement needs connect to services such as pre & post-natal supports,
parenting, early learning, counselling, smoking cessation & prevention and specific support groups.
Organizational Responsibilities
- Complies with all relevant legislation and KCHC policies, including privacy laws.
- Commits to acquiring an understanding of the importance of trauma responsiveness and the

Basic Education and Experience Requirements
- Undergraduate degree and/or relevant post-secondary education
- One year plus practical experience in providing services to newcomers including orientation,
advocacy, counselling/advising, case management and referral work which could include lived
experience as a newcomer. - Short term crisis counselling experience and/or training, experience with victims of war and
trauma preferred. Strong knowledge of trauma-informed care approaches
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, Dari or Somali including public speaking.
- Able to communicate effectively in a cross-cultural context with persons who are not native English
speakers - Knowledge of the strengths & challenges faced specifically by refugees to Canada is an asset
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural, diverse environment with co-workers, clients and partners
- Ability to treat all individuals with respect and interact in a tactful and supportive manner while
maintaining professional boundaries - Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of how to access appropriate resources
- Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including statistical
spreadsheets (Excel) - Available to work flexible hours including evening and weekends
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position
- Excellent interpersonal skills, and a commitment to being a “team player”.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and considerable self-direction

- Valid Driver’s License, Driver’s Abstract, and proof of vehicle liability insurance as this is a
requirement under KCHC’s insurance provider (HIROC) - Current Immunization Record
